There Is Nothing In The Scriptures Authorizing Abortions

I. Introduction: Abortion is typically a hot topic, especially during Presidential elections. So, here we go to see what God says on the subject.

A. First, what God says is the only thing that matters (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, Galatians 1:10, and Revelation 4:11)!

  1. Man is not the standard (Proverbs 3:5-7, Proverbs 23:4, Proverbs 28:26, Jeremiah 10:23, and Romans 12:1-2).
  2. Man cannot be trusted to establish a moral, consistent standard (Psalms 94:11, Proverbs 14:12, I Corinthians 2:6, and I Corinthians 3:18-19).
B. God’s word is the standard from which all are to live (Isaiah 8:20, Luke 4:4, I Thessalonians 4:1-2, and II Timothy 3:15-17).

  1. His word is the form [pattern] to which we must hold fast (II Timothy 1:13).
  2. It is His word, the standard, that can save (Acts 20:32) and that we will be judged by (Romans 2:16).
  3. So, what can we learn about things pertaining to abortion from the powerful, living (Hebrews 4:12) word of God?

II. Body: Not A Lifeless Clump Of Cells, But A Child (Genesis 25:21-22, Exodus 21:22-25, II Samuel 11:5, Job 3:1-3, Matthew 1:23, Matthew 24:19, and Luke 1:41).

A. God made man a “living soul”, a breathing creature (Genesis 2:7). So, what is God’s viewpoint regarding those who choose to take lives?

  1. God’s punishment before and under the Law of Moses (Genesis 9:6, Leviticus 24:17, and Numbers 35:30).
  2. God’s view on the taking of innocent life (Proverbs 6:16-19; cf. Exodus 23:7)?
  3. What about those rewarded to do so (Deuteronomy 27:25)?
  4. What is the eternal punishment for murder [not repented of] (Revelation 21:8)?
B. Have you considered God’s view of life even before the womb (Jeremiah 1:5)?

  1. Human life is of God (Psalms 139:13-16).
  2. Children are an “heritage” [possession, property, inheritance] of the Lord (Psalms 127:3-5).
  3. Do you really want to anger the Almighty (Hebrews 10:30-31 and Hebrews 12:29)?
C. Regarding excuses for abortion such as rape or genetic disorders, don’t punish the innocent child. God does not (Deuteronomy 24:16).

  1. Those who understand God’s law know better than to kill the child of a sinner for the father’s transgressions (II Chronicles 25:1-4).
  2. Children are seen as innocent in the eyes of the Lord (Psalms 106:37-38 and Matthew 18:1-6).
D. Since we looked at the Scriptures and see the very opposite of authority for abortions, what would happen if we added to God’s word our own authority for that which is clearly not there (Proverbs 30:5-6 and Revelation 22:18-19)?

  1. Abortion is another doctrine and as such, is accursed (Galatians 1:8-9).
  2. Since authority is not found in God’s word, it is a doctrine of men with the punishment that comes with such (Colossians 2:20-22).

III. Conclusion: Because of Jesus Christ, a person who has done vile things can be washed, sanctified, and justified (I Corinthians 6:9-11). Like Saul of Tarsus [a.k.a. Paul the Apostle], even those who have killed can be forgiven (I Timothy 1:12-16). Make haste to get right with our Lord if abortion (murder) or any other sin is on your account.
