The Mouth Of The Righteous
I. Introduction:
A. A fool’s mouth is his destruction (Proverbs 18:7).
- Fools talk a lot (Ecclesiastes 10:11-14).
- They don’t listen (Proverbs 23:9).
- Don’t listen to that which will cause you to err (Proverbs 19:27).
- Test what you hear with the ultimate question of whether or not God is good with such counsel (Ephesians 5:10).
II. Body: Psalms 37:30-31
A. Righteous individuals gain wisdom from the right source (Proverbs 2:6-7).
- You know who is righteous based upon that person’s conduct (I John 2:29 and I John 3:7).
- God’s law is in his or her heart (Psalms 1:1-2) and his or her life is guided by the Lord’s will (Psalms 37:23).
- There is no wisdom in those that think they are wise, but reject God’s word (Jeremiah 8:9).
- True wisdom gives life (Ecclesiastes 7:12; cf. Proverbs 8:1; 8:35-36).
- To depart from the snares of death (Proverbs 13:14; cf. Proverbs 15:2-4).
- The wise continue to learn and thus their words are profitable (Proverbs 12:18 and Proverbs 16:22-24).
- What is spoken by those with godly wisdom is good, useful, and edifying (Ephesians 4:29).
- Think here about what Jesus said to Peter three times (John 21:15-17).
- Think about what is said of pleasant words (Proverbs 16:24).
- So shall knowledge of wisdom (Proverbs 24:13-14).
- The righteous only desire good (Proverbs 11:23).
- Righteous individuals are not swift to speak (Proverbs 15:28; cf. James 1:19).
III. Conclusion: Surround yourself with the right people (Psalms 119:63 and Proverbs 13:20).
