Words Of Truth

"That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth..." (Proverbs 22:21).

Having A Work-Life Balance

I. Introduction:

A. Work is a necessary part of life (Proverbs 19:15, I Thessalonians 4:11-12, and II Thessalonians 3:10).

  1. Not providing for one’s family is a terrible statement (I Timothy 5:8).
  2. Even beyond providing, it feels good to earn a living (Ecclesiastes 5:12).
B. Before we get into the heart of the lesson, we need to remember that we cannot ever surrender ourselves to carnality (Romans 13:12-14 and Galatians 5:24).

  1. This lesson is not about turning us to the things of this world (I John 2:15-17).
  2. Nor am I suggesting we slack off on our spiritual work (I Corinthians 15:58; cf. Matthew 16:27).

II. Body: Ecclesiastes 3:9-13

A. What point is there in earning a wage and constantly putting off enjoying the fruit of your labor (Ecclesiastes 2:24)?

  1. You are not taking your money with you (Ecclesiastes 5:15-19).
  2. Counting on the future to enjoy it isn’t wise either (Proverbs 27:1 and James 4:13-16; cf. Luke 12:13-21).
B. Learn from Jesus to take some time (Mark 6:30-32).

  1. He was “about His Father’s business” (Luke 2:41-49, John 4:31-34, and John 9:4).
  2. He was social as well (Matthew 11:18-19).
C. Listen, Godliness is profitable not only in the life to come, but the life that is now (I Timothy 4:8).

  1. Being godly and loving life are not at odds with one another (I Peter 3:10-11).
  2. Godliness allows us to balance enjoying the fruit of your labor with not desiring to be rich to have more to enjoy (I Timothy 6:6-10).

III. Conclusion: Enjoy things in this world without abusing such (I Corinthians 7:31).
